Hipster Pedal Powered Coffee Grinder

Friday, January 10th, 20142 Comments

Not only does Cherry Hill Coffee count a number of two wheeled, pedal powered bicycle enthusiasts among our legion of fans but they tend to be the most loyal, die-hard coffee drinkers to boot. And now we have evidence of the lengths they will go to for a fresh brew from across the pond. Two English hipsters have created the world’s first pedal powered coffee grinder that will fit on almost any type of fixed wheel/single speed bicycle.

Gear Grinder is a small chain driven coffee grinder that grinds a single hopper of coffee, and is attached to the seat stay of a single speed bicycle. It works with a normal chain on a flip-flop hub and allows cycle loving coffee aficionados to grind their morning brew the best way possible, by foot.

As they explain on their website: “There’s a clear, often moustachioed, overlap between those who love great coffee and ride fixed-gear bikes to work every morning. We saw that as a brilliant opportunity. As far as I’m concerned this is up there with the discovery of fire and the creation of the internet in its value to the people of earth. We are massively excited about bringing something totally unique to market.”

Billed as the “the coolest grinder on the street”, the Gear Grinder can turn 20 grams of beans into fine espresso powder after a short ride. But the price tag might be tough to saddle up to even for the prêt à pédaler set, at over $625 Canadian. That could buy you a lot of beard oil.

If you do snag one, let us know…and may we recommend the light-weight and versatile Aeropress coffee brewer? Happy trails!
