City of Rosetta’s

Last week I had the opportunity to visit North America’s coffee mecca. No, not Seattle. Portland, Oregon has surpassed the emerald city as most caffeinated city in the United States. With over two dozen roasters and countless shops, coffee culture in Rip City is serious business. And it was no coincidence that the SCAA held their annual expo in beautiful, weird and rainy Portland. With 6 days in town I had plenty of time to get acquainted with some of the best coffee I’ve tried. From polished cafe’s like Barista to undercover joints like Courier, the quality and craftsmanship of coffee was amazing.
As for the show itself, the number of vendors and booths was overwhelming. There were producers from around the world, Roaster manufacturers, espresso machine and brewer companies, makers of syrups, chocolate, chai and the list goes on. One of the highlights was watching the USBC Championships unfold. Barista’s from across the United States squared off in a competition turning out some of the most fantastic espresso’s and cappuccinos in winner-takes-all, in-your-face style. It was quite a dramatic show and exiting to see an event like that at such a high level. I also managed to pile on a few workshops during the weekend, brushing up on some comparative cupping and profile roasting techniques.
The biggest highlight though was connecting with colleagues from across the industry and catching up over a pint of Portland’s finest brew’s at the many parties and events celebrating the SCAA expo. It was a rewarding experience, and one I hope to repeat next year in Boston!

Wine Barrel Aged Coffee | Special Cupping

Hey wine lovers and coffee lovers! We’re stoked to announce we are having a special public cupping of our Wine Barrel Aged Coffee tomorrow at 2. Being in the heart of British Columbia’s Wine Country, it was only a matter of time before these two wonderful beverages came together. Green Papua New Guinea Enorga coffee aged two weeks in a Quail’s Gate Foch barrel and roasted this morning – should be delicious! The aroma is incredible.
